Abstract

Vinyl halide polymers capable of giving low viscosity plastisols are prepared by aqueous emulsion polymerization in the presence of a seed wherein as seed there are used two or more latices having average particle diameters different from one another. The preferred vinyl halide is vinyl chloride. Examples describe the polymerization of vinyl chloride in aqueous emulsion in the presence of dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium persulphate and sodium bisulphite, and seed latices of average diameter (1 and 2) 0,6 and 0,25 micron and (3) 0,12 and 0,25 micron, and the formation of plastisols from the polymers obtained and dioctyl phthalate. More than two seed latices, e.g. of diameters 0,12, 0,25 and 0,6 microns, may be used. Further quantities of emulsifier may be added in stages throughout the polymerization.
