Abstract

928,478. Jet-propulsion plant. A. A. GRIFFITH. Sept. 7, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960; Nov. 10, 1960], Nos. 31591/60 and 38721/60. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] The working fluid for downwardly-discharging elongated direct lift nozzles on an aircraft is provided by five gas-turbine engines 21 (two shown), grouped around and driving the shaft of an impeller 15 (Fig. 1), by a common turbine 20. The turbine exhaust gases pass through ducts 23 to mix with the impeller air, which is then led to the nozzles. In an alternative, two coaxial impellers are driven individually by two engines through one-way clutches, permitting an impeller to windmill if its associated engine fails. Each impeller blade may comprise a hollow fibre-glass shell filled with foamed plastic resin. Fig. 17 shows a cross-section of the aircraft and its two nozzles. Each nozzle is divided by a wall 65, 66, into two parts, one of which may be blanked off by a flap 67 to reduce the area from that required for cruise to that required for take-off. Further flaps 63, 64 may be pivoted to vary the area of that part of each nozzle which is always operative. Specification 928,479 is referred to.
