927,636. Printing and cutting machines. MILFORD-ASTOR Ltd. Dec. 20, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1960], No. 5/60. Classes 100 (1) and 100 (4). In a machine for printing and cutting labels b from an intermittently-fed compound-foil B comprising a label forming foil mounted on a backing strip b<SP>1</SP> from which it is stripped for use, a heated printing die 3 and a cutting die 4, which are located adjacent one another over a table 1, are simultaneously thrust operatively downwardly by rams 8, 9 reciprocated vertically in the machine frame by a crank mechanism mounted on a shaft 11 driven from a motor D through a reduction gear-box D<SP>1</SP> and chain engaging sprockets 26. The cutting die is arranged only to cut the label forming foil. The printing is carried out in known manner by passing a printing foil A between the heated die 3 and the foil B, the foil A travelling at right angles to the foil B from a spool 21 through feed rollers 22 mounted on a carriage 23 reciprocated by a connecting rod 24 operated by an eccentric 25 mounted on the shaft 11. The carriage movement may be adjusted to vary the length of the foil A drawn forward. After printing and cutting the foil B passes between guides 27, through delivery rollers 28, driven intermittently by the motor to draw the foil B forward during the period when the rams 8, 9 are raised-and between guide rollers 29, the waste upper foil b<SP>2</SP> being stripped from the backing strip b<SP>1</SP> and wound on to a roller c whilst the backing strip b<SP>1</SP> carrying the cut out labels b passes between guides 31 to cutting discs 32 where the two rows of labels which have been produced simultaneously are severed longitudinally into two strips. These strips are wound on to rollers 33, 34. The waste upper foil b<SP>2</SP> may be left on the strip b<SP>1</SP> remaining thereon when the labels are removed for use. The printing die 3 comprises type discs 6<SP>1</SP> calibrated, for example, in pounds, shillings and pence each disc being rotationally adjustable by a concentric sleeve 5<SP>1</SP> manually actuated through a flange 5.
