Abstract
927,476. Cartridge-operated fastener driving tools. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Oct. 24, 1960 [Nov. 9, 1959], No. 36433/60. Classes 9 (1) and 119. A cartridge-operated fastener driving tool of the piston or plunger type comprises a piston having a rear portion 4 formed of relatively soft metal and a front reduced portion 3 of relatively hard metal with means for detachably securing the fastener 1 and a piston arrester 33, 34 adapted to form a restriction adjacent the tool muzzle to initially retard and finally stop the piston in its movement beyond the restriction by deformation of the rear portion 4, the front portion 3 being of sufficiently reduced size to pass the restriction. The arrangement is such that the fastener 1 is sufficiently forwardly spaced from the deformable portion 4 to reach, on firing, its predetermined position or not excessively beyond it before the restriction begins to arrest the piston. The piston arrester may comprise swinging jaws but, as shown, it is formed of a plurality of resilient jaws 33, 34 normally sprung outwardly and mounted on a ring-like base screw threadedly mounted at 36 on the tool barrel 30. In the inoperative position the die-like restriction 33<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP> is sufficiently open to ermit insertion or removal of the piston but in the operative position with the tool pressed against the workpiece 75, a cam ring 40 carried by the tool shield cams the jaws 33, 34 inwardly to form a die restriction large enough to pass only the fastener 1 and front portion 3 of the piston. The front and rear portions of the piston may be either integral or two parts secured together. In the latter case the front part may be of hard steel while the rear part may be of soft iron or steel, copper, aluminium or suitable alloys thereof. The piston may be coated or plated, e.g. with copper to avoid corrosion and/or for lubrication. The front and rear portions 3, 4 of the piston are joined by a conical portion 5 and the die-like restriction 33<SP>1</SP>, 341 has a corresponding conical form. Various forms of piston units are described including one in which the fastener 101, Fig. 4, is connected by a threaded recess and spigot 51 to a holder 53 having a knurled shank 57 force fitted into a recess 58 of the piston 54.
