Abstract

A process for the production of polypropylene monofilaments wherein the monofilaments are drawn at least 3 times their original length and thereafter heat-treated at a temperature below the melting point of the polymer but above 90 DEG C., is characterized in the drawn monofilaments are heated under such conditions that they are allowed to contract by up to 25% of their drawn length, in which case the degree of draw used should be not greater than 6:1 and the temperature of heat treatment is from 90 DEG -125 DEG C., or alternatively, the drawn monofilament is heat-treated while it is held at substantially constant length, in which case the degree of draw used should be not greater than 7:1 and the temperature of heat treatment lies above a certain minimum temperature, which minimum temperature is dependent upon the degree of draw used and has a value in DEG C., which varies according to a substantially linear relation with the degree of draw used between the limits of 3:1 and 7:1 such that the minimum temperature is 112 DEG C. when the draw ratio is 4,5:1; 120 DEG C. when the draw ratio is 5:1; 128 DEG C. when the draw ratio is 5,5:1; 135 DEG C. when the draw ratio is 6:1; 142 DEG C. when the draw ratio is 6,5:1 and 151 DEG C. when the draw ratio is 7:1. Preferably the monofilaments are drawn from 4,0-5,5 times their original length at a temperature of at least 80 DEG C. but less than 130 DEG C. If desired the monofilaments may be drawn in steam at atmospheric pressure.
