Abstract
927,169. Cut-outs. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. Oct. 28, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 5713/62. Divided out of 927,168. Class 38 (1). A high-speed cut-out particularly for protective systems according to Specifications 927,167 and 927,168 comprises a partly hollow conductor 13 containing an explosive charge 8 and having circular or helical shrapnel grooves 13a on its outer surface such that the shattering of the conductor 13 by predetermined detonation of charge 8 results in the rapid termination of any arcing. The conductor 13 is enclosed in a chamber 9 comprising a tubular insulating casing 9a closed at one end by a steel cap 11, connected to a blade contact 12, and at the other end by a steel priming chamber 1 connected to a further blade contact 2 and soldered at 10a to a bush 10 in the wall of chamber 1. The latter encloses a detonator 4 for the charge 8, the conductor 13 being connected to cap 11 by a screw 18, the firing wires 6 passing through insulating member 5 and bore 1b of a cover 1a of the chamber 1. The chamber 9 may be filled with fine-grain sand or borax. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the chamber 1 is omitted, both the detonator and charge being contained in the hollow conductor and the firing wires being led out through a hollow extension at one end of the conductor which passes through a steel plug closing the insulating casing and is itself closed by a plastic plug. For the protection of a three-phase network a cut-out is provided for each phase, and a single detonating fuse may link the devices.
