Abstract
A polymer or copolymer of a mono-olefin and/or a diolefin, or natural rubber is stabilized with a phenolic stabilizer which is the condensation product of a phenolic compound substituted with carboxyl, amino or alcoholic hydroxy groups, and an organic compound containing at least two groups selected from hydroxyl, amino and carboxyl groups. The condensation product preferably is of molecular weight from 500 to 5,000, and optionally contains sulphur containing groups. The compositions may also contain calcium or zinc soaps, carbon black or organic sulphur compounds such as diesters or diamides of thiodialkanoic acids, mercaptans, sulphides, polymeric sulphides or sulphur compounds of molecular weight of at least 300. The description contains a list of compounds from which the phenolic stabilizers and the sulphur compounds of M.W. > 300, may be derived. The examples illustrate the use of phenolic stabilizers derived from (1) 3-Me-6-tBu phenol/laevulinic acid condensation product, thiodiglycol and thiodipropionic acid, (2) 3-Me-6-tBu phenol/laevulinic acid condensation product, 4-thiaoctanoic acid and tri(hydroxymethyl) propane, and (3) 3-Me-6-tBu phenol/laevulinic acid condensation product and hexamethylene glycol.
