Abstract

926,199. Bookbinding. H. MULLER. Feb. 23, 1961 [March 1, 1960], No. 6655/61. Class 16. A bookbinding machine for trimming and gluing the spine of a pile of loose leaves and applying a cover sheet thereto, comprises a reciprocating clamping device 2 for gripping a pile of loose leaves and conveying them back downwards past a back-trimming device 40 and a rotating gluing roller 45 to a position above a platform 56, which moves upwardly to press a cover sheet Q, placed thereon by hand, on to the back of the pile of loose leaves and carries reciprocating pressure plates 57a, 57b which move inwardly to press the cover sheet about the sides of the pile of loose leaves adjacent the back thereof. The platform 56 is supported by a central pillar 55 having a cam follower 550 at its lower end, which abuts the cam surface 540 of a piston 52, whereby the platform is raised and lowered. Linked rods 58, 59 pivotally mounted on the platform and engaging slots in the pressure plates 57b, 57a, are rotated in opposite directions to move the pressure plates inwardly, when the outer end of the piston 52 engages the lower end of the rod 58. The pile of loose leaves is placed by hand between the fixed and movable jaws 25, 27 of the clamping device, the jaw 25 being moved by a piston 24, Fig. 4 (not shown). The clamping device is moved along a guide track 20 by an oscillating lever 17 articulated to a rocker platform 13 and driven by a piston 30, likewise mounted on the rocker platform. The pistons 24, 30 and 52 are hydraulically or pneumatically operated, being controlled by a valve 74 operated by cams mounted on a rotating shaft 71 driven by a motor 7.
