Abstract
926,002. Coating with metals. RIGHT HON. THE EARL OF STRAFFORD. May 15, 1959 [Feb. 17, 1958], No. 16821/59. Divided out of 926,001. Class 82. In a method of producing a radiant heater, sheet metal having a layer of refractory or heatresistant dielectric material or at least one face thereof is heated to at least 550‹ F. and an electrically conducting layer is deposited on at least one of said dielectric layers, whilst it is heated, to produce an electrical resistance element. In its preferred form, the heater comprises metallic sheet 1 provided on both faces with dielectric coatings 2, 5. Circuitous resistor 3 is deposited on coating 2 and protected by a further dielectric layer 6. Additional coating 7 of heat-resisting material may be applied. Specifically, sheet 1 may be of steel, copper or aluminium; coatings 2, 5 are of vitreous enamel or porcelain; resistor 3 is of aluminium or an alloy thereof applied by spraying; coating 6 may be of fused alumina or zirconia, silicone varnish or a resin (e.g. melamine); and coating 7 may be of rock wool, foam glass or fibre glass. Resistor 3 may be formed by (a) spraying through a mask, (b) spraying all over, applying a resist and then etching away the exposed metal, or (c) spraying on a ribbed surface and subsequently grinding the ribbed areas.
