Abstract
A silicon halide or halogenosilane is purified, for use in the preparation of silicon, by contact in the vapour or liquid form, before or after fractional distillation or sublimation, with brown amorphous silicon, activated graphite, or highly activated silicic acid, or a mixture thereof, at from the boiling point of liquid air to 300 DEG C. The graphite is activated by oxidation with air at red heat, and the highly activated silicic acid is obtained by hydrolysis of silicon chloroform with water. As a modification, the amorphous brown silicon may be partially oxidised, e.g. by air at elevated temperature. The contact materials may be deposited on carriers, e.g. quartz glass, or other glass, or other inert materials. Contact may be effected at atmospheric pressure to 10 atmospheres. Examples refer to the purification of silicon chloroform, silicon tetrachloride, and silicon tetrabromide, after distillation.
