A double-walled tank has its inner 1a and outer 2a shells in close contact at its ends and the middle section 26 of its outer shell attached to the external periphery of its outer end shells 2a, for example by welding. The middle section of the outer shell may be built up of sections butt-jointed, the joints being protected by internal strips 3. The outer shell may have a channel (not shown) to accommodate a leakage-detection device or pipes 6, 7 may be provided for the purpose with a drain well at 6a.
