Abstract

Boron triaryls are made by reacting a boron compound including within its structure both B-C and B-H bonds, or a mixture equivalent to such a compound, under moisture-free and air-free conditions with a purified aromatic hydrocarbon. The starting material may be an alkylated boron hydride B2RxHy, wherein R is an alkyl radical, x + y = 6, and x is an integer from 1 to 4. It is also possible to use boron trialkyls in the presence of hydrogen, mixtures of N-trialkyl borazanes and boron trialkyls, or mixtures of boron hydrides and boron trialkyls. The process is preferably effected at a temperature between 150 and 450 DEG C. The process may be carried out continuously in a reactor heated to 180 DEG -200 DEG C. provided with means for the continuous evaporation of readily volatile by-products such as unreacted alkyl diboranes, boron alkyls and aromatic hydrocarbons. Examples describe the preparation of boron triphenyl, an isomeric mixture of boron tritolyls, boron tri-p-xylyl, and isomeric trinaphthylboron compounds. Specification 854,919 is referred to.
