Abstract

924,935. Safety devices for heaters supplying protective atmospheres for furnaces. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 16, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 28426/60. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). A safety device for an electrically-heated apparatus for producing a protective furnace atmospheric from a carrier gas and a liquid having an alcohol, ketone or aldehyde radical comprises a electromagnetic valve in the liquid supply line, a thermal switch heated by parallel resistors connected in series with the main heater resistance, and a pressure-responsive switch in the gas supply line so that the electromagnetic valve is opened when the pressure in the gas line and the temperature of the thermal switch exceed predetermined values. A switch M, closed when the pressure in the gas supply line is sufficient for the operation of the atmosphere reheater and circulation, is arranged in series with a thermal switch T and the winding of a relay b, which has a contact in the circuit of the normally closed electromagnetic liquid supply valve V. A switch D, closed when the flow of liquid in the supply line is sufficient, is in series with a second relay a. The thermal switch T is heated by a resistor R6 in series with the atmosphere heating resistor R1 and has such a lag that it closes when the atmosphere heater is at a suitable operating temperature. During normal operation, switches T and M are closed, relay b energized, so that the electromagnetic valve V in the liquid supply line is open, switch D closed and relay a energized. Resistors R2, R8 in series with the heater resistor R1 are then bridged, and resistors R4, R5 connected in parallel with switch-heater resistor R6 to prevent the switch overheating. If the liquid flow fails, switch D opens to deenergize relay a, and connect a resistor R2 in series with heater R1 to limit the current flow to a value at which damage to the heater is avoided. The resistor R 4 is disconnected so that the switch heater R6 can still keep thermal switch T closed. If the gas supply pressure falls, switch M opens, de-energizing relay b, and closing electromagnetic valve V to cut-off the liquid flow, so that switch D also opens. Resistors R2, R3 are then in series with heater resistor R1, so that overheating is avoided, and shunt resistors R4, R5 are disconnected so that switch heater R6 maintains switch T closed. In the event of failure of the heater resistor R1 or the electricity supply, switch heater R6 cools and switch T opens, de-energizing relay b and thus cutting-off the liquid flow. Lamps L, S light when power is applied to the safety circuit and when relay b is closed respectively. Specification 889,209 is referred to.
