Abstract

924,744. Gyroscopic apparatus. ANSCHUTZ & CO. G.m.b.H. July 24, 1961 [Aug. 5, 1960], No. 26792/61. Class 97 (3). In a directional gyroscope in which the rotor rotates about an axis A within a casing 10 which is mounted by horizontal trunnions 11, 12, defining an axis B, within a vertical ring 13 pivoted by trunnions 14, 15 defining a vertical axis C in a frame 16 and in which a spirit level 19 detects movement of the rotor about axis B to control torque motor 17, 18, so as to process the rotor back into a given level, the axis A is maintained parallel to the earth's axis by mounting the level 19 on a platform 22 pivoted on trunnion 12, and so operating a setting motor 24, which may be a synchro-receiver, that a worm 23 engaging a worm-wheel 20 fixed to trunnion 12, makes the platform 22 and level 19 tilt in accordance with the latitude. Since the earth's rotation thus does not process the gyro, the torque motor 17, 18 is only operated infrequently and for short periods of time, and the azimuthal indication of axis A tends to wander less than when the axis A is maintained horizontal. A torque motor 25 may be provided on trunnion 11 to maintain the spin axis A aligned in the plane of the magnetic meridian. The frame 16 may be carried by a float or may form a second gimbal ring having a pair of opposite trunnions coaxial to a horizontal axis E.
