923,921. Controlling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 12, 1958 [March 1, 1957], No. 6989/57. Class 39 (4). A reactor is controlled by mercury in an evacuated system part of which is in the reactor core and part of which is elsewhere and includes a reservoir. The system may be a U tube with one limb inside and one outside the core, an electromagnetic pump being provided to withdraw mercury from the core. The limbs inside the core may be formed by narrow bores h in steel walls w enclosing fuel elements, the limbs being filled or emptied in succession. Specification 803,701 is referred to.
