Abstract

<PICT:0923510/III/1> In the production of light oil from benzolized wash oil by steam distillation in a column having a lower stripping section and an upper fractionating section, steam being introduced at the foot of the column, the wash oil is preheated to a temperature of up to 180 DEG C. and divided into two streams, the first being passed directly to the head of the stripping section and the second being passed to the fractionating section after heating to a temperature of up to 230 DEG C. The second stream may be partially vaporized in a flash chamber before introduction into the column in order to remove high boiling impurities. Spent wash oil may be fed into the second stream before heating. As shown, benzolized wash oil passes through a line 1 in heat exchange with overhead vapours from a column 17 into a furnace 4 wherein it is heated first by convection and then by radiation to 160 DEG -180 DEG C. A portion of the initially heated oil is then passed via line 18 to column 17 while the remainder is returned via line 13 to furnace 4 and is heated therein to 220 DEG -230 DEG C. and is then passed to column 17 as vapour via flash chamber 35 and line 16, high boiling impurities being passed off from flash chamber 35 via line 36. Spent wash oil is added to the initially heated oil in line 13 from line 31. Steam is supplied to column 17 via line 22 and stripped wash oil is drawn off via line 23. The overhead vapours pass off via a line 24, heat exchanger 2 and cooler 25 to a condenser 26. Water passes off via line 27 and light oil via line 28, a portion of the light oil being recycled via line 30 to the distillation column 17.
