Abstract
A process for effecting the multistage aerial oxidation of hydrocarbons particularly naphthalene to phthalic anhydride is carried out in apparatus comprising a vertical tower and means for feeding a reaction mixture through the tower from the top downwards, the tower comprising a plurality of superimposed units each comprising a permeable stage supporting beds of catalyst, a gas-diffusion grid located above the stage and spaced therefrom and a lateral duct for the supply of air opening immediately below the stage of one unit and above the gas-diffusion grid of the next lower unit.ALSO:A process for the multistage exothermic oxidation of hydrocarbons in general, and naphthalene to phthalic anhydride in particular, by means of air comprises bringing a reaction mixture of hydrocarbon vapour and air in successive adiabatic stages into contact with successive quantities of catalyst at a temperature below the optimum reaction temperature, such that in each stage the heat evolved in the reaction raises the temperature of the mixture above the optimum temperature, and then again cooling the mixture to a temperature below the optimum reaction temperature, the cooling being effected by the addition of an appropriate quantity of air and the final mixture, obtained after the last stage, being directed to at least one heat exchanger for recovering the heat content of the mixture. Examples describe the oxidation of naphthalene by air in the presence of V2O5 at about 350 DEG C. and the oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride similarly. Preferably amounts of additional air increase in a geometric progression with successive stages of reaction. If desired there may be added to the reaction stages air containing hydrocarbon homogeneously mixed therewith.
