Abstract

923,007. Thermionic valves. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Jan. 27, 1960 [Feb. 24, 1959], No. 3016/60. Class 39 (1). In a discharge device comprising a cylindrical cathode 20 and a plurality of coaxial grids 21, 22 having longitudinally extending side rods, a surrounding anode 29 has a plurality of longitudinally extending flutes 28, and the side rods of the grids are in alignment and register with the mid-portions of the flutes. The anode portions between the flutes are narrower than the space between adjacent pairs of aligned side rods so that electrons from the cathode are formed into a plurality of radially directed beams of which only the outer portions which are near the side rods are directed into the flutes. Thus a space charge for suppressing secondary-electron emission from the anode can be formed even for the less dense parts of the beams since the path of travel for these parts is lengthened to the necessary critical distance. Also the arrangement reduces inter-electrode capacity and provides a longer breakdown path between the anode and grids. As shown, the anode is constituted by a molybdenum coating, 0.0001 inch thick, on the surface of an annular ceramic, e.g. alumina or beryllia, envelope part. The control and screen grids are wound with their lateral wires on the inside of their side rods to obtain close spacing of the control grid to the cathode giving a high transconductance.
