Abstract
922,891. Furnace covers; walls. SPEMBLY Ltd., A. C. THORNE, and F. E. EASTWICK. March 22, 1961 [March 24, 1960], No. 10478/60. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XI] In an electric furnace, the outer wall 1, Fig. 1, comprises an inner thin shell 3 attached to the outer wall 1 by resilient means 19, e.g. springs, and the space between the thin shell 3 and graphite plates 14 is filled with a refractory powder, e.g. lamp-black, the arrangement being such that the shell 3 is loaded differentially, the stiffness of the springs in a row increasing gradually from the top to the bottom of the furnace so as to maintain a resilient pressure on the refractory filling. The furnace cover, Fig. 3, is also filled with lamp-black, and comprises a central graphite block 32 coupled to graphite tie-rods 33 and to a metal ring 28, the ring 28 forming a heat-conducting path to the watercooled metal neck 2, Fig. 1, of the furnace. The furnace may be filled with argon through pipes 23, 24, or it may be evacuated.
