Abstract

Wood-fibre boards, especially hardboard, are impregnated with at least 40 of their volume of an aqueous solution containing at least 65% by weight of a mixture of carbamide, an inorganic phosphate capable of esterifying the cellulose, and phosphoric acid, the molar ratio of the carbamide to the total phosphorus compound content being at least 4:1, and subsequently heat-treated to esterify the cellulose. A suitable inorganic phosphate is ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, and the molar ratio of carbamide to total phosphorus compounds is preferably at least 6:1, but not more than about 10:1. The impregnation step may be effected by vacuum or pressure. Heat-treatment may be effected at 100 DEG -140 DEG C. for 1-3 hours, and should be such that on leaching the treated boards with water at least 95% of the chemicals impregnated are retained. Treatment enhances the fire-resistance of the materials without adversely affecting their strength.ALSO:Wood-fibre boards, especially hardboard, are fireproofed by impregnation with at least 40% of their volume of an aqueous solution containing at least 65% by weight of a mixture of carbamide, an inorganic phosphate capable of esterifying the cellulose, and phosphoric acid, the molar ratio of the carbamide to the total phosphorus compound content being at least 4:1, and subsequently heat-treated to esterify the cellulose. A suitable inorganic phosphate is ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, and the molar ratio of carbamide to total phosphorus compounds is preferably at least 6:1, but not more than about 10:1. The impregnation step may be effected by vacuum or pressure. Heattreatment may be effected at 100 DEG -140 DEG C. for 1-3 hours, and should be such that on leaching the treated boards with water at least 95% of the chemicals impregnated are retained.
