Abstract

922,663. Drinking-straws. SAFE-T PACIFIC BAKING CO. March 28, 1961 [April 11, 1960], No. 11384/61. Class 14 (2). Drinking-straws are reinforced by curling or deforming inwardly one or both of their end portions so that concentric inner layers are formed which are preferably integral with the remaining portions of the straw. The straw may be made of paper, cellophane, or plastic, either spirally wound and glued, or extruded; before and/or after deformation it may be coated with a solidifying protective material, e.g. paraffin wax, polyethylene, polyacrylate, which should preferably completely fill the space between the inner deformed end part and remaining portions in the finished straw (Fig. 11b). The centre part of the straw may be provided with transverse corrugations to render it flexible. As shown (Figs. 1 and 4), straws 10 are fed from a hopper 12 into semicircular recesses 16 in a rotating drum 14, and are held in position by guides 22 whilst being moved downwardly to engage an endless belt 28 moving at a high speed relative to the drum 14 and at an angle to the direction of rotation thereof. By this means the straws, one after the other, are caused to spin in their recesses 16 and forced along them to engage the heads 37 and shafts 36 respectively (Fig. 4) of members 34 which turn in the straw ends, the shafts 36 being secured in grooves 38 in an end plate 35, by screws 39. Alternative and deforming means are described which utilize either a bent wire having two shafts and a U- shaped projection extending into the straw and recess, or a solid end plate at the end of the recesses which are then provided with projections to initiate the inward turning of the tube ends. By providing a second endless belt similar to 28 and setting each belt at an angle to the horizontal and to the other and by further providing deforming means at the other side of the machine, both ends of each tube may be reinforced.
