Abstract

A thixotropic emulsion comprises an aqueous emulsion of a film-forming addition polymer containing a natural or synthetic water-soluble hydroxyl group-containing organic colloid together with 0,25 to 5% by weight of the emulsion of a water-soluble titanium chelate, e.g. diisopropoxy bis-(beta-diethanolamine ethoxy) titanate, dibutoxy bis-(beta-N-methyl ethanolamine ethoxy) titanate, diisopropoxy bis-(acetylacetonyl) titanate, diisopropoxy bis-(ethylacetoacetyl) titanate and dihydroxy titanium lactate. Polymer emulsions specified are those of polyvinyl acetate, copolymers of vinyl acetate with vinyl caprate and dibutyl fumarate and a copolymer of styrene, ethyl acrylate acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid. Water-soluble colloids specified are sodium and aluminium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl starch, hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and alginates. The emulsions may also contain pigments, extenders, and emulsifiers such as titanium dioxide, talc, asbestine, mica, whiting, china clay, barytes, a naphthalene-formaldehyde condensation product and sodium hexametaphosphate.
