Abstract

922,293. Apparatus for growing plants. S. T. PURKISS. April 11, 1961 [April 13, 1960], No. 13201/60. Class 6(2). In apparatus for assisting the growth of young plants or for seed germination, containers C are fed into a tower structure by an elevator 23 and run under gravity along a spiral track 20, 20a to an outlet 22 from which the containers are removed by an endless track 25, a further container entering the apparatus at 21 as a container is removed at the outlet 22. Air is fed from a heater and fan unit 16a to a central pillar 11 provided with outlet apertures 15 and charged with water vapour by feeding water through a pipe 18 and heater 19 into the pillar. The roof 13 of the tower is raised or lowered by means of an electrically operated jack 14 for ventilation purposes. A fertiliser tank 27 and water tank 28 are housed at the top of the tower and connect with a spray pipe 29 which follows the path of the containers. Before being placed in the containers, seeds may be sprinkled on to sheets of paper to which an adhesive has been applied.
