Abstract

A method of carrying out gas-vapour reactions in a catalytic reactor comprises passing the gas-vapour mixture through a plurality of catalyst beds to react the mixture in each of the beds, removing the partially reacted gas from the reactor after it passes through one of the beds, quenching the gas with liquid to provide additional vapour, and removing from the gas any residual liquid not vaporized before introducing the gas into contact with the next catalyst bed. The method may be effected in apparatus which comprises a plurality of segregated catalyst beds, 2, 3, 4, within a single reactor 1, means to conduct the partially reacted gas stream external to the reactor between the catalyst beds, means to contact the gas stream with additional liquid external to the reactor, means to completely separate the gas stream <PICT:0922259/III/1> from any residual liquid resulting from the addition of liquid, and means to return the gas stream to the next catalyst bed. As shown means to conduct the partially reacted gas stream external to the reactor comprises removal pipe 12 vessel 13 and input pipe 21. Within vessel 13 the partially reacted gases are contacted with additional liquid by a stream of water 16 dispersed by nozzle 17. Residual liquid in the partially reacted gases is removed through valve 19. Specified gas is air and specified vapour is methanol.ALSO:<PICT:0922259/IV(a)/1> Apparatus in which methanol air mixtures may be catalytically converted to formaldehyde comprises a plurality of segregated catalyst beds 2, 3, 4 within a single reactor 1, means to conduct the partially reacted gas stream with additional liquid external to the catalyst beds, means to contact the gas stream with additional liquid external to the reactor, means to completely separate the gas stream from any residual liquid resulting from the addition of liquid, and means to return the gas stream to the next catalyst bed.
