Abstract

921,936. Road construction. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. Jan. 6, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 3870/60. Class 20 (4). In a method of constructing a road having a tarry or bituminous surfacing layer, breaks in the surface of a concrete base layer are bridged by flattened tubing of polymeric material which is substantially resistant to tarry and bituminous products and has a softening-point above the temperature at which the surface layer of tarry or bituminous material is applied to the concrete base layer. In the exemplified embodiment a bridging member 3 comprising a length of flattened tubing 4 of polycaprolactum and containing a stiffening member 5 of hard tempered aluminium foil is placed centrally over a bituminous expansion joint 2 between concrete sections 1 of a road. A surface layer 6 of asphalt is applied over the concrete base. The polymeric material may alternatively comprise a condensation product of hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene or a polymer of 3,3-bis(chloromethyl)-oxacyclobutane.
