921,436. Extrusion machines. LONZA ELECTRIC & CHEMICAL WORKS Ltd. July 29, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 26485/60. Class 87(2). A single-worm extruder has a worm 1 characterized in that a number of turns 2 to 5 at the end a which faces the extrusion nozzle run oppositely to the turns 6 of the remaining part of the worm and that the product of the enclosed volume per turn and the pitch of these reverse turns is smaller than the corresponding product for the turns in the adjacent melting zone b of the worm, this being an essential condition for the production of a resultant feed motion towards the nozzle. The back-pressure which develops in the region of the reverse turns 2 opposes the feed motion and serves to miss the material which performs a motion in the pockets between the turns 2 approximately following a double spiral (i.e. a helix the axis of which is itself a helix).
