Abstract
921,428. Control of A.C. motors. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959], No. 38832/60. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XL (c)] An A.C. load, e.g. a three-phase induction motor 2, is controlled by a hyperconductive, negative resistance, adjustable breakdown device 8 in each line, and across each device is connected a rectifier 10. In the forward direction the devices effectively block until a breakdown voltage across emitter 20 and collector 22 is reached, when they exhibit negative resistance and a large current flows while the potential drops. The breakdown voltage is reduced by applying a continuous or, suitably phased, pulsed control current to electrode 24 from a supply 12. In the reverse direction the device has a Zener characteristic, but since repeated operation with a reverse voltage in excess of the Zener breakdown value may cause failure the rectifier 10 is provided to carry the negative half-cycles of current. The forward breakdown voltage with zero control current is higher than the supply voltage, so the device may be used as a switch, actuated by applying or removing the control current, but also the value of the current may be adjusted to cause breakdown at different points on the A.C. cycle to give speed control of the motor.
