Abstract
Alkyl halides are prepared by heating a halogenated sulphonic acid alkyl ester at 100 DEG C. to 300 DEG C. with an alkali metal halide. Sodium and potassium chlorides and fluorides are preferred halides. Methyl, ethyl, isopropyl and n-propyl fluoro and chloro sulphonic acid esters are specified halosulphonic esters. Examples describe the heating of (1) fluorosulphonic acid methyl ester with KF yielding methyl fluoride; (2)-(4) chlorosulphonic acid ethyl ester alone or with NaCl or KCl to yield ethyl chloride; (5) fluorosulphonic acid ethyl ester with KF or KF and mercury yielding ethylfluoride and also alone or with mercury to provide negligible amounts of ethyl fluoride and (6) fluorosulphonic acid ethyl ester with NaF to yield ethyl fluoride.
