Abstract

921,262. Photo-electric devices. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 6864/60. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXXVI] A variable resistor comprises a non-uniform light filter placed between a constant light source and a photo-conductive material so that the resistance between two terminals connected to the material is variable by relative movement of the filter. In Fig. 1, an opaque screen 5 with a hole or slit 6 is placed between electric light source 2 and a photo-conductive body 5 with terminals 8. A cylinder 9 consists of glass with a photographic emulsion coating of varying density situated opposite hole 6; cylinder 9 may be rotated by knob 10 to vary the intensity of light falling on body 7 and thus its resistance. The photo-conductive material may consist of selenium or cadmium sulphide, activated if desired with copper or chlorine, and may be a thin film, a sintered powder or a single crystal. In an alternative arrangement relative rotation of two polarized discs is used instead of the variable density emulsion. Two bodies of photo-conductive material may be used, each associated with a hole in the screen 5 and the associated filter element, the arrangement being such that turning knob 10 increases the resistance of one body while decreasing the resistance of the other thereby forming a potentiometer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 879,949.
