Abstract
Low permeability carbon, i.e. carbon of permeability such that the volume of helium which can pass through one centimetre cube of the carbon in one second under a pressure difference of one atmosphere is not greater than 10-6ml., is produced by heating a polymer which has been formed from a polymerizable monomeric cyclic carbon-containing compound at a sufficiently high temperature and for a sufficient length of time to cause the polymer to decompose completely into carbon and volatile matter and to drive off the volatile matter. Suitable polymers are those produced from furfuryl alcohol, furfural, furane, coumarone, indene, cyclopentadiene and mixtures thereof. Shaped carbon bodies of low permeability may be produced by polymerizing or partly polymerizing a polymerizable monomeric cyclic carbon-containing compound or mixture of such compounds under heat and pressure, arresting the polymerization process when the material is sufficiently plastic to mould, moulding the material to the desired shape, completing the polymerization process if necessary, and heating the polymerized material at a sufficiently high temperature and for a sufficient length of time to cause it to decompose completely into carbon and volatile matter and to drive off the volatile matter.
