A can seaming mechanism for seaming ends on can bodies consists of a cylindrical frame in two parts 4 and 5 having in the lower part 5 four spindles 17, 18 mounted in bearings with levers 19, 20 carrying seaming rollers R1, R2 movable in a plane normal to the axis of rotation of the head and having operating levers 21, 22 attached to the spindles from the outer ends of which flexible bands or chains 25 connect them to two concentric sleeves 26, 27; two spindles 17 carry first operation rollers R1 to one sleeve 26 and two spindles R2 carry second operation rollers R2 to the other sleeve 27 each sleeve having a lever carrying a roller 29, 30 which engages with a cam 15, 16 carried on the spindle of a planet wheel 12, 13 mounted in the upper part of the head frame and driven by a sun wheel 11 mounted on a sleeve 6 driven at a different but fixed speed relative to the head, the upper and lower parts of the head frame being partially rotatable relative to each other and lockable together at any point in this partial rotation by means of adjusting bolts 7 and 9. This adjustment is to enable cans of different sizes to be seamed. Attached to the head frame 4 is a driving sleeve 3 surrounding spindle 1 which carries a chuck 2. In operation, the head frame 4, 5 and the gear-wheel 11 are, by gears attached to the sleeves 3 and 6, rotated in the direction of the arrows, the gearwheel 11 at a slower speed than the head frame. A can and loose can end are held against the chuck 2. Due to the relative rotation of the sleeves 3 and 6 the cams 15 and 16 rotate. As cam 15 turns, the roller 29 mounts the cam and turns sleeve 26 which, through the flexible chain links, moves levers 21 inwards and thus brings the first operation rollers R1 into engagement with the can end to perform the first operation of double seaming. As the head 4, 5 continues to rotate the roller 29 passes off the cam 15 and roller 30 mounts the second operation cam 16, thus rotating the sleeve 27 and bringing the second operation rollers R2 into engagement with the can end to complete the double seam.
