Abstract

919,904. Tufting machines. HILL (KIDDERMINSTER) Ltd., WILLIAM. Dec. 21, 1961 [Dec. 22, 1960], No. 44196/60. Class 112. A tufted carpet is made by traversing a base fabric below a frame supporting spools or carriers for pile yarns, arranging transversely below the base fabric reciprocable gripper means which on upward movement penetrate the base fabric and then seize the yarn ends, on the succeeding downward movement draw the yarn ends through the base fabric, and on the succeeding upward movement push the now looped yarns through the base fabric, severing the looped yarns to provide tufts of the required height, and subsequently applying rubber latex or like material to the underside of the base fabric. A base fabric 12 is drawn horizontally between rollers 111, 131 from a supply roller 11 by a take-up roller 13. Mounted on frames 14 above the base fabric are spools 16 of yarns, the ends 15 of which pass through comb separators 17. Situated below the base fabric are yarn grippers 18 each of which comprises a fixed jaw 183 rigid with a horizontal bar 19, and a hinged movable jaw 181 which has a pointed upper end and is biased to the closed position by a spring 184. When the grippers, which are reciprocated vertically by a rotary cam 20, pass upwardly through the base fabric, the movable jaws 181 are opened by levers 22 oscillated by a rotary cam 23. The grippers thereby seize the yarn ends, and then successively draw the yarns downwardly through the base fabric and push the now looped yarns upwardly through the base fabric, when knives 23 cut the yarns to form tufts 151 of the required height. It is stated that components of existing Axminster carpet looms may be used for the machinery. In a modification, Fig. 5, the grippers 18 are in the form of looped spring jaws the free ends 18a of which are upwardly directed and are pointed to pierce the base fabric. The jaws are opened, as they approach their uppermost position, when they are forced over a chisel-shaped projection 171 from the comb separator 17. Specification 779,250 is referred to.
