Abstract
919,640. Photo-electric smoke detection. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd., and WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. May 19, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1960; April 9, 1960], Nos. 6500/60 and 12719/60. Class 40 (3). A detector for smoke and like suspensions includes a light source 12 and three photosensitive devices 14, 15 and 16. Light from source 12 passes through a slit 13a in a partition 13 in the apparatus and falls directly on device 15. The presence of smoke in the light path causes a reduction in the amount of light falling on device 15. In the absence of smoke, device 14 is not illuminated, or is illuminated to only a small extent. Smoke particles scatter light from the main beam and increase its illumination. Device 16 receives light direct from source 12 through adjustable attenuator 19, 20 and it is so arranged that under normal conditions (without smoke) the output from devices 14 and 16 exactly balances the output from device 15 with which they are connected in parallel but with opposite polarity. Smoke drifting in through louvres 11a causes an outof-balance current amplified by a transistor amplifier and used to operate a relay controlling an alarm lamp. For checking purposes a normally short-circuited lamp 17, in series with two lamps in parallel forming source 12 is provided. Removal of the short-circuit causes illumination of device 14 and operation of the relay unless one or both lamps 12 have failed. The devices 14, 15 and 16 are photo-voltaic cells and 14 may be a silicon cell and the remaining two selenium cells.
