Abstract

919,580. Degassing metals. BALZERS PATENT-UND LIZENZ-ANSTALT. Jan. 16, 1961 [Jan. 23, 1960], No. 1724/61. Class 72. [Also in Group XXII] Molten metal, particularly steel, is degassed while being poured from a casting ladle 1 through an in termediate chamber 3 connected to the ladle and into a casting mould 4 which is sealed against the chamber by being pressed against it with a metal seal interposed, the chamber and mould only being evacuated or filled with a protective atmosphere through a conduit 5. A plurality of composite casting moulds, with parts 14 and 15, may be filled in series by being moved on a carriage 12, raised and pressed against the underside of the chamber while in juxtaposition and lowered again after filling, using hydraulic lifting jacks 6 and 7, the rods 8 and 9 of which engage on a bridge 10 carrying the carriage. The metal seal is preferably embedded in a groove in one of the chamber or mould sealing faces which may be coated with scale-resistant steel.
