Abstract
Sensibly dry tape joint cement compositions capable of being mixed with water to form a wet cement, are prepared by a method which comprises mixing a dry, inert, inorganic filler with a binder, the water in said binder being absorbed by the filler without any subsequent drying step, said binder being an aqueous dispersion of a hydrolysed polyvinyl ester of an organic acid or a hydrolysed copolymer resulting from the copolymerization of a vinyl ester of an organic acid and another polymerizable monomer, said hydrolysis product having a degree of hydrolysis of 50 to 100% and being at least 50% soluble in water at 20 DEG C., the amount of said hydrolysis product being at least 0,25% calculated as dry resin based on the weight of filler. The binder may comprise a hydrolysis product of polyvinyl acetate or of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with vinyl chloride, ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid or a maleic half ester, or of a copolymer of vinyl butyrate with maleic anhydride. The filler may be clay, dolomite, limestone, talc, mica, asbestos or silica. The compositions may be mixed with water to form cements which may be used with paper tapes for sealing gaps between wall boards.
