Abstract

A ceramic body is formed by sintering a mixture of powdered oxides with an organic binder and a sufficient quantity of a colloidal solution of silicic acid free from alkali ions to form not more than 2% silica in the sintered body. According to the examples specified the following oxides or mixtures of oxides are used:-(a) BaO, TiO2, Bi2 O3 and SnO2; (b) BaO, TiO2 and ZrO2; (c) BaO, CaO, TiO2, ZrO2 and ZnO; (d) Al2O3; (e) MnO, ZnO and Fe2O3; (f) TiO2. The silicic acid is prepared by hydralysing an aqueous solution of ethyl silicate with a mineral acid and the organic binder may be a mixture of methylcellulose, pregelatinised starch and glycerine.
