Abstract

Thermoplastic powders having an apparent density of 550-750 g per litre are produced by mixing at a temperature not exceeding 30 DEG C. a major proportion of a cellulose acetate powder having an apparent density of 400-600 g. per litre and a moisture content of 0,3-0,8%, and substantially all of which passes a screen having square apertures the sides of which are 0,4 mm. in length, with a plasticizer which is a liquid at the temperature of mixing, does not dissolve the powder at normal atmospheric temperature and does not cause the powder to form crumbs or gelatinize, and thereafter heat-ageing the powder, preferably at 50 DEG -90 DEG C. for 6-24 hours. The cellulose acetate used preferably has an acetyl value (as acetic acid) of 52-58% and a DP of 150-250 units of anhydroglucose. The proportion of plasticizer in the final product is preferably 35-45%, particularly 39%. The plasticizer may be ethyl phthalate, methylglycol-phthalate or mixtures of these, mixtures of methyl-phthalate and triphenylphosphate containing not less than 40% by weight of the latter or mixtures of ethyl-phthalate and/or methylglycol-phthalate with triphenylphosphate containing not more than 20% by weight of the latter. The preferred mixing temperature is 5 DEG -15 DEG C. There may be incorporated in the mixture stabilizing, delustring or colouring agents in proportions too small to effect the granularmetric distribution of the product. The powder is preferably disposed during heat ageing in a layer having a thickness of not more than 3 cm. The product is suitable for the coating of articles by the melting process.
