Abstract

918,936. Rocket motors and charges therefor. UNITED TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION. March 1, 1961, No. 7556/61. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). In a solid propellent rocket motor the outer casing 22 is formed of segments 10 to 20, each containing a separate hollow propellent charge. The exhaust gases pass through the opening 32 to a nozzle, not shown. The opening 28 is for the insertion of an ignition device. In the charges of 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 circumferential burning slots 34 are provided between the segments and longitudinal burning slots at 36, 38. At the longitudinal slots, the walls are protected by the additional insulation 40, 42. The easing segments may be joined by bolts or locking rings. In an alternative form a second propellent charge may be in the form of a rod and mounted along the rocket centre line within the hollow charges. In other forms, not shown, rear segments may have a greater wall thickness than the front segments, the cone angle of the segments may vary from front to rear and the propellent composition may be varied from segment to segment.
