Abstract
918,911. Continuously carding and spinning fibres. PERMO SPINNING Ltd. March 4, 1959 [March 5, 1958; Oct. 23, 1958], Nos. 7029/58 and 33886/58. Classes 120 (1), 120 (2) and 120 (3). In a machine continuously producing yarns from condenser slivers and employing spinning rings subject to a common continuously operating chase motion and separate traverse mechanisms for individual rings or groups of rings, the individual rings or groups of rings are arranged to be released from the traverse mechanisms and moved downwardly for doffing spun packages in sequence. The carding and spinning devices may be incorporated in a single composite machine or existing carding machines may be incorporated with one or more spinning machines. Slubbings 5 from a carding engine and condenser pass between rollers 60, 61 to lappets 55, rings 36 and bobbins on spindles 11. The carding engine may be adjusted to give the correct weight of yarn without drafting or one or more drafting devices may precede the rollers 60, 61, two sets of the latter being provided for two staggered rows of spindles 11. The spindles may be in single rows or more than two rows and/or in tiers. In the preferred form, two rings 36 are carried by an arm 28 slidable on vertical spacers 27 and counterbalanced. Pivotally mounted in each arm 28 is a half-nut 39 adapted to enter into or be withdrawn from engagement with a driven threaded shaft 30, by manual operation of a rod 41 having a knob 42. Rotation of the threaded shaft 30 normally effects the " lift " of the rings 36, the traverse being carried out by a reciprocation of the shaft 30 along with spacers 27 as part of a frame guided and traversed by rods 17 and counterbalanced by an arrangement 22-25. At any time during the building of the bobbins, a ring-supporting arm 28 may be lowered to permit doffing by manipulation of the knob 42. Instead of the threaded shaft 30 and the half-nut 39, an endless chain arrangement or a notched bar and ratchet mechanism may be used. As the arms 28 rise, extensions 57 upon them contact and raise collars 53 supporting lappets 55 and slidable on rods 52. The spindles 11 are driven by belts 13 and each group carried by an arm 28 may be braked by operation of a knob 51. Variable gear drives are arranged for the spindles and cop-building mechanism but it is preferred to drive rollers 6 and 60 from the carding engine. On starting up the machine, spinning is commenced at groups of spindles in sequence and, when each group is ready for doffing, the respective arm 28 is disengaged from its shaft 30 and lowered. The yarn is then broken and material issuing through the rollers 60, 61 is led into a suction tube 58. After donning the empty cop, the operator winds on to it a short length of yarn from an auxiliary bobbin which is then pieced to the material entering the suction tube 58 and spinning can recommence.
