Abstract
918,310. X-ray protection devices. WATSON & SONS (ELECTRO-MEDICAL) Ltd. April 28, 1961 [May 11, 1960], No. 16548/60. Class 98 (1). A gonad protector consists of a number of screening segments opaque to both light and X-rays, arranged on a transparent carrier, so that an appropriate one of the segments may be positioned to protect the gonads of a patient under X-ray examination. The invention is intended for use with an optical field indicator, in which a light source is arranged to have a virtual position at the focus of the X-ray tube, so that the relative position of patient and light source can then be adjusted until the patch of light falling on the patient corresponds in size and position with the region required for radiographic examination. Thus this preliminary positioning can be carried out without exposing the patient to unnecessary irradiation. The protector itself consists of a plurality of lead segments attached to a plastic sheet. The sheet may be so mounted in guides on the face of the field indicator as merely to slide in one direction only. Fig. 1 shows an alternative in which a number of lead segments 6, 7, 8, 9 are fixed on a plastic disc 5 which is rotatably mounted on a sheet 4, itself slidable. Fig. 2 (not shown), is an alternative form of rotatable mounting. The lead segments can be of different shapes to suit children or adults of either sex.
