Mandrels 1 wound with pile yarn 2 are assembled side by side by means of projections 5 engaging holes in supports 6, and a backing 3 of rubber composition containing a blowing agent is applied and heated; the coils of yarn are then cut after withdrawing the mandrels or by running knives along grooves 4 in the mandrels. An adhesive may be applied to the yarns before the backing is applied. The mandrels may have a groove at the side to which the backing is applied, into which the composition penetrates to anchor the tufts more securely; strips of rubber composition may be laid in the grooves before winding with yarn. Fabrics may be made face-to-face by applying a backing to both sides of the mandrel assembly and cutting through the middle; the mandrels may consist of pairs of rods (which may be flat on their adjacent sides) having a gap between them for passage of the knife. The vulcanizing and blowing may be effected between heated platens, spaced to determine the thickness of the expanded backing. In a continuous process, the assembly may be led to the platens between wire mesh belts. The backing composition may be applied in sheet form or as a paste.
