Abstract

918,182. Piston packings. HORSTMANN & SHERWEN Ltd. Nov. 28, 1961 [Dec. 1, 1960], No. 41350/60. Class 122 (1). The plunger 1 of an hydraulic remote-control mechanism is sealed to the cylinder 2 by means of a thin-walled sleeve 12 made of flexible plastic or other impervious material and reinforced by individual substantially axially - extending natural or synthetic fibres, the sleeve being connected at opposite ends, e.g. by rims 14, 15, respectively to the cylinder and plunger and being inwardly foldable upon itself, from the end connected to the plunger, to vary the internal sleeve volume. The sleeve may be made from a plastic strip of material in a semicured condition which has the reinforcing fibres calendered therein and is then rolled into a cylinder which is subsequently cured in a mould. Alternatively, a tube of semi-cured plastic with embedded fibres is obtained by extrusion and cured in a mould. The plunger 1 has a cross-head 9 from which hollow guide rods 10 extend to slidably engage guideways 7 in the cylinder body. Fluid is fed through an inlet 6 in a cylinder cover 5.
