Abstract

917,975. Dental engines. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Feb. 17, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1960], No. 6470/60. Class 81 (2). Means for driving a dental handpiece comprises a housing enclosing an electric motor and to which the handpiece may be attached. In the embodiment described the motor is a two-phase four-pole motor 5 driven from a static inverter 30 the output frequency of which may be adjusted. It is enclosed within a cylindrical casing 1 so that its spindle 8, carrying a driving dog 9, projects into a hollow extension 4 to which the handpiece may be connected. Below the motor housing there is a hollow extension 12 which receives a water spray tube 16 leading to an outlet connection 18 for the handpiece and a compressed-air pipe 15 leading to a similar connection not shown. A portion of this air supply is led off by a narrow bore tube 22 which directs a stream of air around the space 7 between the motor and the housing 1, this air finally escaping through orifices 23.
