Abstract

917,279. Welding by fusion. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 5, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959], No. 34257/59. Class 83 (4). In inert gas shielded arc welding, the electrode 9 projects through the wall of a transparent shield 7 shaped to co-operate closely with tho work 2 or a support 4 for the work 2, inert gas, e.g. argon, being introduced into the shield 7 and escaping between the shield 7 and the work 2 or the support 4. The shield is clamped by a nut 8 on to a welding head 5 having a tungsten electrode 9. A filler rod or wire can be introduced through an aperture 13. The work in the form of a titanium flange 2 and tube 1 is supported by a copper chill 4.
