Abstract
The invention comprises substituted dinitro anilines of the general formula:- <FORM:0917253/IV (b)/1> wherein R is ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, or allyl; R1, R2, and R3 are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, or allyl; or R and R1, or R2 and R3 may form with the nitrogen atom a piperidino or pyrrolidino radical; and R4 is halogen (fluorine, chlorine, or bromine), halo-alkyl, or alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms. Specified compounds of the above formula include N,N-di-n - propyl-4-trifluoromethyl-2.6-dinitro-aniline, N.N-di-n-propyl-2.6-dinitro-p-toluidine, N.N-diallyl-2.6-dinitro-aniline, 2.6-dinitro-1-piperidinobenzene, and 2.6 - dinitro-1-pyrrolidinobenzene. These compounds may be obtained by reacting 2.6-dinitrochlorobenzene or a substituted 2.6 - dinitrochlorobenzene with a secondary amine in an inert solvent such as benzene or ethanol. They may be used as herbicides.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise as active ingredients substituted dinitro anilines of the general formula <FORM:0917253/VI/1> <FORM:0917253/VI/2> wherein R is ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl or allyl; R1, R2 and R3 are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, or allyl; or R and R1, or R2 and R3 may form with the nitrogen atom a piperidino or pyrrolidino radical; and R4 is halogen (fluorine, chlorine, or bromine), halo-alkyl, or alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms. These compounds may be used as selective herbicides for killing germinating grasses in the presence of established grasses and most broad-leaf plants. They may be applied in the form of sprays, or as granules, or upon carriers such as vermiculite or peat. Preferred compounds of the above formul are those with two n-propyl groups attached to the amino nitrogen e.g. N.N-di-n-propyl - 2.6 - dinitro - aniline, and N.N - di - n-propyl - 4 - trifluoromethyl - 2.6 - dinitro - aniline.
