Abstract
In the isomerization of olefins as described in the parent Specification there is added to the feed a sulphur-containing petroleum which is simultaneously desulphurized. The reaction is effected at 100 DEG -500 DEG C., 10-100 atmospheres and 0,5-20 vol./vol./hr. over a solid acidic catalyst carrying one or more sulphides, selenides, tellurides, antimonides and/or arsenides of a Group VI and/or VIII metal. The petroleum fraction may boil in the range 0 DEG -250 DEG C. and contain 0,01-0,5% sulphur. If of different boiling range from the olefinic feed, it may be separated from the product by fractional distillation or condensation.ALSO:In the production of branched chain hydrocarbons as in the parent Specification in which a feed containing unbranched or sparsely branched olefins is contacted at elevated temperature and pressure with hydrogen and a solid acidic isomerisation catalyst carrying one or more sulphides, selenides, tellurides, antimonides and/or arsenides of Group VIa and/or Group VIII metals, there is added to the feed sulphur or a compound thereof which is vaporizable and readily decomposed under the reaction conditions. Suitable compounds of sulphur are hydrogen sulphide, alkyl mercaptans, dialkyl sulphides and dialkyl disulphides, the amount of sulphur added being 0.001-1% by weight of the feed. In a preferred form there is added a petroleum fraction containing 0.01-0.5% sulphur and boiling in the range 0-250 DEG C., preferably in an amount such that the weight ratio to olefinic feed is 0.005-0.1 times the difference between the bromine numbers of the olefinic feed and the fraction. Preferably this fraction is heated to 10-100 DEG C. above the reaction starting temperature and the olefinic feed heated by mixing. The fraction is simultaneously desulphurised and, if of different boiling range from the olefinic feed, may be separated from the product by fractional distillation or condensation and subjected to reforming. Alternatively the mixed product may be used as such as a motor fuel. The olefinic feed may be a gasoline obtained by thermal reforming or thermal or catalytic cracking and is treated at 100-500 DEG C., 10-100 atmospheres and 0.5-20 vol./vol./hr. The product is generally saturated, and specific olefins may be converted to products having a different number of carbon atoms.
