Abstract
A polymer composition comprises from 98 to 60% by weight of a polyvinyl chloride and from 2 to 4% by weight of a solid product obtained by polymerizing ethylene together with a monoethylenically unsaturated compound represented by the formula <FORM:0917083/IV(a)/1> where X may be hydrogen or an alkyl group and R is an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with from 1 to 8 carbon atoms to give a polymerization product which contains from 7 to 95% by weight of units of the monoethylenically unsaturated compound. The polyvinyl chloride may be a homopolymer of vinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with up to 20% of another copolymerizable monomer. Compounds which may be copolymerized with ethylene include vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl benzoate and isopropenyl acetate. A third polymerizable monomer selected from the class consisting of monoethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons other than ethylene or from the class consisting of monoethylenically unsaturated polar vinylidene compounds may be incorporated in the polymerization. The polymeric material is blended with polyvinyl chloride, e.g. by mixing in a Banbury mixer or blending on a two-roll mill. Antioxidants, fillers, lubricants, pigments and other usual additional ingredients, e.g. further polymeric materials may be added during blending which is preferably carried out at 160 DEG to 180 DEG C. Preferably the polyvinyl chloride is gelled first and then blended with the copolymer. Specification 703,252 is referred to.
