Abstract
Benzene is purified and recovered from an impure stock by subjecting to catalytic cracking in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst containing 10-15% chromium oxide supported on high purity, low sodium content, gamma alumina at above 1150 DEG F. and separating benzene from the gas formed. Sulphur compounds are destroyed, paraffinic impurities cracked to gas and homologues of benzene are dealkylated. Suitable stocks are coal tar light oil and petroleum catalytic reformates boiling above the gasoline range, e.g. 300-400 DEG F. Suitable conditions are a space velocity of 1-5 wt./wt./hr., preferably to give a residence time of about 12 seconds, a pressure of 100-1,000 p.s.i.g. and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon molar ratio of 1-10:1.
