Abstract
Salts of bis(1-alkyl-1-carboxy-1-hydroxymethyl)phosphinic acid are prepared by a modification of the process of the parent Specification in which one or both of the a -ketoalkanoic acid and the hypophosphorous acid are reacted in the form of a metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salt. A pH of 1 to 9 is preferred when both reactants are metal salts; the pH may be controlled by means of mineral acid. Temperatures of 20-100 DEG C. are mentioned. The invention also comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0916517/IV (b)/1> where Y and Y1 are hydrogen, ammonium ion, substituted ammonium ion or metal ion, with the proviso that at least one of Y and Y1 is ammonium or substituted ammonium, and R is C1-17 alkyl. Examples describe the preparation of the following salts of bis-(1-methyl - 1 - carboxy - 1 - hydroxymethyl)phosphinic acid; monosodium; disodium; trisodium; monocalcium; monocadmium; ammonium; diammonium; tris(methylammonium); bis(1-methylbutylammonium) and tris(cyclohexylammonium) and of monosodium bis(1-decyl - 1-carboxy-1-hydroxymethyl)phosphinate and monosodium bis(1-propyl-1-carboxy-1-hydroxymethyl)phosphinate.ALSO:Salts of bis (1-alkyl-1-carboxy-1-hydroxy-methyl)-phosphinic acid of formula <FORM:0916517/I/1> where Y and Y1 are hydrogen, ammonium, substituted ammonium or metal ions, with the proviso that at least one of Y and Y1 is ammonium or substituted ammonium, and R is C1-17 alkyl (for preparation see Group IV (b)) are stated to be used as chelating agents for metal ions and in particular for treating iron chlorosis in soils.
