Abstract

916,372. Plating strip electrolytically. STAHLUND WALZWERKE RASSELSTEIN/ANDERNACH A.G. June 15, 1960 [June 20, 1959], No. 21052/60. Class 41. Metal strip (e.g. steel) is coated electrolytically with metal (e.g. tin) and the coating is melted and thereafter solidified by quenching with a jet or stream of liquid which extends over the full width of the strip. As shown, coated strip 2 issuing from plant 1 in which the coating is melted, passes tube 3 having slot-like opening 3a from which jet 4a of quenching liquid 4 impinges on the strip at an acute angle α to the direction of travel A of the strip. Quenching may alternatively be effected using a stream of liquid derived from the overflow of a trough (Fig. 2, not shown). The side of the strip which is contacted with the quenching liquid is given a matt appearance which thus serves to mark a side in cases where the strip has coatings on the two sides of different thicknesses. If both sides of the strip are to be quenched, two quenching devices are provided, one on each side.
